President Buhari has replaced the dead person he nominated as member of Federal Character Commission with another nominee.

Recall that two weeks ago, President Buhari nominated Tobias Chukwuemeka and 37 others as members of the board of the Federal Character Commission. The nomination stirred rounds of controversy as Tobias who was a former member of the House of Representatives died on February 27, after battling an unknown illness.

The Nigerian leader has now sent in four new names to the senate to replace the four persons earlier appointed from their respective states, including Mr Chukwuemeka who died at the age of 59.

This was comveyed in a letter which was read out by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, at the close of plenary on Tuesday May 12.

The new nominees are Moses A. (Delta), Afamefuna Osi (Ebonyi), Wasiu Kayode (Lagos), Alakayi Mamman (Nasarawa).

The letter read;

“In compliance with the Provision of Section 156(1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I write to request for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the following four nominees as members of the Federal Character Commission as replacement of my earlier submission for Delta, Ebonyi, Lagos and Nasarawa States.”

Twitter tells employees they can now work from home

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter has informed his employees that they can now work from home “forever” amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

The 43-year-old CEO informed staff on Tuesday saying all in-person events would be cancelled as the company announced plans to adopt a permanent work-from-home structure amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Employees would receive a $1,000 allowance to equip themselves with the tools necessary to work-from-home, Mr. Dorsey said, adding that the office was unlikely to open before September.

In a statement, Twitter said it was “one of the first companies to go to a WFH model in the face of COVID-19, but [doesn’t] anticipate being one of the first to return to offices.”

The company said if employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue doing so “forever,” then “we will make that happen.”

“If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return,” the statement reads.

The company said with very few exceptions, offices won’t open before September.

It added when they do open it will be “careful, intentional, office by office and gradual.” It said there will also be no business travel before September “with very few exceptions” and no in-person company events for the rest of 2020.

“We’re proud of the early action we took to protect the health of our employees and our communities. That will remain our top priority as we work through the unknowns of the coming months,” it said.

Jennifer Christie, the head of human resources at Twitter, also told BuzzFeed News the company would “never probably be the same” as it began allowing employees to work-from-home during the initial months of the outbreak.

“People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way,” she said at the time. “Managers who didn’t think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective.”

She added: “I do think we won’t go back.”

Speak for yourself - Senate President tells Enugu Senator who said "Africans marry for children not love"

Senator representing Enugu north, Chukwuka Utazi says that Africans do not marry for love, but simply to have children.

Utazi said this while contributing to a debate on a bill seeking to prevent, control and manage sickle cell anaemia in the country, on Tuesday, May 12.

Utazi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator further stated that it is painful to realise that some people cannot marry their main choice because of blood group.

“This bill is taking me down the memory lane because I’m an AS carrier and when I was about getting married, several years ago, I moved into this orbit and I know what I went through because I was in love. I knew the trauma. After that incident, for five years I didn’t come out of it,” he said.

“So I am speaking from experience and I know how it pains that you have made a choice and you discover that the choice can’t work. Because in Africa, we marry for children, we don’t marry for love.”

The Senate President Ahmad Lawan interrupted him at this point, saying:

“Senator Chukwuka Utazi, I think you should be speaking for yourself.”

Utazi continued saying: “In the developed world, particulars of a child’s blood group is given at birth.

”A test is done to show the blood group, the genotype before leaving. In the birth certificate of the child, all those things are put in place.

”We should not be waiting for when people want to go and marry, that is when they will start checking their genotype and their blood group, it shouldn’t be.”

Also speaking on the matter, Biodun Olujimi, senator representing Ekiti south, asked Nigerians to look at ways of addressing health needs.

“The time has come for us to look inwards to solve some of these health needs and also support institutions that are doing so. Going forward we need to take serious blood testing for intending couples,” Olujimi said.

“We will not allow love take away the best part of our marriages.”

The bill which is being sponsored by Sam Egwu, senator representing Ebonyi north, passed second reading after it was put to a voice vote by Lawan.

“I decided to kill her because she deprived me of becoming a lawyer”

"I decided to kill her because she deprived me of becoming a lawyer" - 22-year-old woman who drowned her one-year-old baby in Lagos says

Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman identified as Adisa Funmilola who drowned her one-year-old baby in her apartment at Plot 22, Gowon Estate, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, because the child prevented her from going to university to study law.

During interrogation, the suspect said that she decided to end the life of her baby because she was tired of taking care of her. She also blamed her action on frustration, saying her baby deprived her of actualising her dream of becoming a lawyer.

According to Adisa, one Folarin Yusuf impregnated her while they were both attending a Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, class at City of Success in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. She said Folarin denied paternity, requesting that pregnancy be aborted.

Adisa said she agreed to have an abortion but her father heard about her pregnancy and told her to keep the baby.

Along the line, she gained admission into the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, to study Law, but had to defer the admission because of the baby and this decision didn’t go well with her.

Adisa who showed remorse for her action, described how she drowned her baby

“I killed my baby and reported myself to the police. I filled a bucket with water, dipped her inside and held her head until she died. “I did it for three reasons. First, I didn’t have the financial might to take care of her. Second, I was tired and frustrated.”

“But the most painful reason is that she deprived me of actualising my dream of becoming a lawyer.” she said

”I made sure that she was no longer moving before I went to the police station to report myself. They did not believe me and thought that I was mad. It was when they finally followed me home that they realized that what I said was true. I reported myself no one arrested me,”

“I would have aborted the pregnancy, but my father advised me against it. The person that is responsible for the pregnancy rejected me. I live with my sister, who has no job and I am also not working.” She added

Asked why she didn’t take the child to an orphanage home or put the child up for adoption and if she was aware of the magnitude of her offence, Adisa said;

“ I wanted to drop her at the church but I realized that it was only death that will free me from that child. I am not in school because of her and even if I tell my father, he will also force me to stay and take care of the baby. My life will be ruined. “

“If they kill me no problem. The most important thing is that I have killed the baby and I am free from that baby. I don’t care.” She said

A woman who is reportedly Adisa’s elder sister said that there is a possibility that Adisa is mentally ill. She said she was at home on the day of the incident, but never knew what her sister was up to until policeman stormed their apartment.

“Yes, we live together. I was in my bedroom while she was in hers. I didn’t know when she drowned the baby.

“I suspect she is mentally deranged because our mother had a similar mental issue before she died. I believe she inherited it because I cannot understand why she did it.”

The suspect was taken to the command headquarters in Ikeja, on Tuesday, May 12, from where the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, directed that she should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCIID, Yaba Panti for further investigation and possible evaluation of her mental health.

Nigerians react as IGP Mohammed withdraws escorts, orders probe of 5-Star Music boss, E-Money

0

Nigerians have reacted to the decision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Idris Mohammed, to withdraw 6 policemen attached to the Chairman, Five Star Group, Emeka Okonkwo aka E-Money.E-Money is the brother of Nigerian musician, Kelechi Okonkwo popularly known as K-Cee.The report emerged on different news platforms on Tuesday and trended on social media that the IG ordered the Lagos State Police Command to withdraw the security personnel attached to E-money and also probe his source(s) of wealth.Confirming the report to DAILY POST, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the command only obeyed the orders from the IGP.According to him, “Well we got the directive from the Inspector General to withdraw police guards from E-Money and we did exactly so.”On the claim making the rounds that E-Money was using his Mobile Police guards as domestic servants, Elkana said, “The reason for the withdrawal I don’t know. Whether he was using them as domestic servants I don’t know where that is coming from.”However, some Nigerians who shared their opinion on Twitter blamed the government for not providing an enabling environment for police officers to do their jobs. Some also asked the IGP to withdraw police officers attached to politicians and other big shots in the country, not just E-Money.DAILY POST curated some thoughts and opinions from twitter.@i_amemeks, “E-money pays them higher than your govt is paying. So let them enjoy service. Besides, none of the policemen complained.@Firstladyship, “IG withdraws E-Money’s 6 policemen. He was surprised police were attached to him and were being used as domestic servants, carrying umbrellas, opening doors and doing menial jobs for him. Do not single out E-Money. Goose and Gander must be equal. Politicians are guilty of the same crime!”@Osusha_27, “The IG of police has ordered the probe of E-Money and withdrawal of his police escorts. I am sure it has to do with his enormous wealth. My question: When will the government probe the cause of enormous poverty and withdraw insecurity around the common man in Nigeria?”@The useless IG of police wants to probe E-money. For what exactly? Come and probe me too for eating ritual meats and guldermasin syrup.”@Sojarextmt, “Reading so many hate comments on him and it’s young people. If he is hated like this upon all the joy he has given us, I don’t who again can do better. Hating the rich will not make us richer. E-money is a good man and no weapon formed against u shall prosper.”@KachiZone, “I am not in support of E-Money using 6 mobile escorts; is he a bullion van? However, let’s be honest; @PoliceNG high hierarchy should be blamed — they wine, dine and collect huge amounts from these socialites in favour of dozens of Mopols as their escorts.”@Chimezieatasie, “In this country as long as you have the money you can have as many police escorts as you like. Even big-armed robbers and kidnappers have police escorts not to talk of an innocent business tycoon like E-money.”@Samjnr6468100, “Can we also revisit police and general civil servants remunerations? Because trust me many of these police officers would prefer to be opening doors and holding umbrellas compared to being sent down to Potiskum because of the money involved. In fact they can bribe to be sent to big men.”@Shy_shye, “If the @PoliceNG is serious with the political will, all police attached to civilians should be withdrawn. Anybody that needs extra security protection should patronize the private security outfit. But guess what? I don’t see that happening because of politicians.”@rukeeo1, “I am sure this was triggered by a post they saw online. I saw pictures of mobile policemen opening his car door for him and while I didn’t have a problem with it. It seemed somehow off. We must remember that the uniform these guys wear represents the entire country and respect that.”
